Darshan Mann, Amrit Mann in  Sharbati

Sharbati, a full length Punjabi play had been staged more than 30 times before it was performed in Richmond's Gateway theater in 1989 in British Columbia, Canada. I wrote and directed the first scene of the Canadian production and acted in it. The play was performed by Indo-Canadian actors except Mohan Baggan.

The play questions some of our deep rooted social traditions. Should a woman accept forever an  impotent husband, accept blame and battering and be a "faithful and well behaved wife? Or she should ruthlessly break the traditions and to satisfy her natural instincts? Sharbati the main character of the play faces this dilemma.

I prepared the music for the play and helped modify the script. It was a full house performance and the play laid the foundation for Indo-Canadian theater.
